Bank Zero is an app-first bank — the entire account opening process takes place on your smartphone. There are no branch visits, no paperwork to post, and no waiting in queues. According to Bank Zero, the registration process takes approximately 10–15 minutes from app download to account activation.
What You Need Before You Start
Before opening a Bank Zero account, make sure you have:
- A South African ID document (green barcoded ID book or the newer smart ID card) or a valid South African passport.
- A South African cell phone number — this will be your primary identifier on the platform.
- A compatible smartphone — iPhone (iOS) or Android — with a working front-facing camera (for facial biometrics).
- A proof of address — a recent utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement not older than 3 months, with your name and residential address clearly visible.
- Good internet connectivity (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
Step-by-Step: How to Open a Bank Zero Account
Step 1 — Download the Bank Zero App Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for "Bank Zero". Download and install the official Bank Zero app (published by Bank Zero Mutual Bank / Neo Labs).
Step 2 — Enter Your Cell Number Open the app and enter your South African cell phone number. You will receive a one-time PIN (OTP) via SMS to verify ownership of the number.
Step 3 — Upload Your Identity Document The app will prompt you to photograph both sides of your South African ID document (or your passport photo page). Ensure the image is sharp, well-lit, and all text is clearly legible.
Step 4 — Complete Facial Biometrics The app uses live facial recognition to confirm that you are the person in the ID document. Sit in a well-lit, quiet space and follow the on-screen prompts. No physical branches or FICA officers are required — the biometric check is done entirely within the app.
Step 5 — Upload Proof of Address Upload a clear photo or scan of your proof of address document (utility bill, recent bank statement, or lease agreement). Accepted formats include photos taken from your gallery or downloaded PDF documents.
Step 6 — Choose Your Account and Card Settings Once your documents are submitted, the app walks you through setting up your account: choose card personalisation (you can add a chosen picture to your card), set your card PIN (manufactured directly into the chip for security), and select a card delivery option.
Step 7 — Account Approval and Automated Risk Assessment Bank Zero's system conducts an automated FICA and risk assessment. In most cases this is completed within minutes. In some cases, an account may be temporarily frozen while a quick additional check is completed — this is standard procedure and normally resolved within 24–48 hours.
Step 8 — Account Active Once approved, you will receive confirmation in the app. Your account is live and fully functional: you can receive money via EFT, share your account details, and use the app for all banking. Your physical debit card will be delivered separately (see the card delivery section).
Documents Summary
| Document | Format Accepted | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SA ID / Smart ID card | Photo (front + back) | Must be the original document |
| SA Passport | Photo of bio page | For non-ID-book holders |
| Proof of address | Photo or PDF | Not older than 3 months |
Why Applications Are Rejected
Common reasons for a failed Bank Zero application:
- Blurry or dark ID photos — retake in a well-lit space.
- Expired or damaged ID document — you must use a valid, undamaged document.
- Proof of address older than 3 months — use a current document.
- Facial biometric mismatch — ensure you match the ID photo; remove glasses or hats.
- Cell number already registered — each South African cell number can only be linked to one Bank Zero account.
Tips for a Smooth Application
- Use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data to avoid upload failures during document submission.
- Complete the biometric recording in daylight or bright indoor lighting — avoid back-lighting from windows.
- Ensure your phone's operating system is updated before downloading the app.
- Have your proof of address document ready as a saved image or PDF on your phone before you begin.
